The Barbarians get ready for the scrum against Palatine earlier this season.

The Chillicothe boys rugby team hosted the All Reds of Metamora Saturday but fell 29-5.

“They had some very strong runners and we missed some key tackles that freed them up and allowed them to score. Once they scored they seemed to get stronger and we didn’t,” coach Laurence Hornibrook said.

The young Barbarian team was able to get one try in from veteran player Jack Vojta after a penalty.

Hornibrook said some players were missing so others had to step in to fill spots they have not played before.

Of the 15 starters, five were on the team last year and for eight players, it was their first regular season game.

“We have some work to do to build the confidence of this year’s team but the attitude of the players is strong, and I look forward to some engaged players this week at practice,” Hornibrook said.

The Barbarians will travel to Springfield to face the Twin City Tornadoes at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The next home match will be at 10:30 a.m. May 3 with the Peoria Renegades.
