IVC softball opens season

The IVC varsity softball team opened its season with a game at home against Eureka Friday and a doubleheader at Canton Saturday.

The Lady Grey Ghosts held it together against Eureka but lost 7-3. Against Canton, IVC lost both games, 9-0, 10-1.

Eureka 7, IVC 3

The home season opener with Eureka was a close match for the Lady Grey Ghosts Friday.

The Hornets got an early jump on IVC with a run scored in the first and second inning with IVC being held to none.

Eureka had a big inning in the fourth with five runs scored.

The Lady Grey Ghosts answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth. IVC kept Eureka from scoring for the remainder of the game.

The top hitters for IVC were Taylor Kimble going 2-for-4 at the plate. 

Haylea Johnigk went 1-for-1 and had a walk and an RBI.

Alayna King pitched all seven innings for two strike outs and allowing three walks.

Canton 9, IVC 0

In the first game with Canton, IVC was held in scoring with no runs but kept the Little Giants in check defensively the first two innings.

Canton posted its first run in the first inning but was held in the second and couldn’t get a runner across the plate.

The Little Giants expanded their lead in the third with four runs and gained four more in the next two innings.

King went 1-for-3 

hitting and pitched six innings for three strikeouts. 

Canton 10, IVC 1

The second game of the doubleheader allowed IVC one run but Canton came out on top.

The Little Giants gained an early lead after scoring five runs in the first inning. They followed up with a run in the second and third.

IVC had its lone run from Kimble with Delaney Coats getting the RBI in the fourth.

No runs were scored in the fifth inning but Canton came out in the sixth to add three more to its score.

Coats went 2-for-3 at the plate and Kimble finished going 1-for-3 hitting a triple.

Coats pitched the six innings for two strikeouts.
