The IVC girls varsity soccer team opened its season with an away game at Pekin in Coal Miners’ Park.

“We came out ready to play but we’re still getting used to each other on the field,” coach Jennifer Adkison said.

The Lady Grey Ghosts were defeated 5-0 against the Mid-Illini Conference team.

Pekin put in its first two goals at 3:34 and 10:53 in the first half.

The Dragons came out in the second to put in three more.

“Unfortunately, some shots didn’t go in for us and some got through our defense and goalkeeper’s hands,” Adkison said. “Other than that it was a good competitive game.”

IVC finished with four shots on goals and seven saves from Taylor Neys.

The girls will travel on Wednesday to Ottawa and Peoria Christian on Thursday.

The first home game of the season will be at noon Saturday against Washington.

“We just got to continue working and continue being competitive, and I think we’ll be fine,” Adkison said.
