The IVC varsity girls basketball team finished its season at the Geneseo Regional with a loss to Dunlap, 45-34.

The Lady Grey Ghosts commanded the first half but fell behind after intermission to the Eagles offensive pressure and shots at the free-throw line.

“I think the things that happened to us were not having Madison and Rudolph. It really, really hurt us,” coach Marc Lowe said.

Both teams were held to single digit scoring in the first quarter but IVC was ahead 9-7.

Junior Shayna VanOstrand opened up the scoring with a drive for a layup on the left side.

Junior Erica Larson was fouled in the paint on IVC’s next offensive possession and made both her free throw attempts. VanOstrand went to the line after to make it 5-0.

Dunlap put up its first two points from under the net but the Lady Grey Ghosts answered right back with a spin move in the paint from senior Hallie Shirley and a jump shot by junior Katelyn Heinz.

IVC called a timeout at 2:27 and Dunlap came out to control the ball for the remainder of the quarter.

Dunlap’s Brianna Henson closed out the scoring with a 3-pointer from the top left.

With about 10 seconds into the second quarter, junior Demi Johnson put in a 3 from the left corner to make it 12-7.

The Eagles grabbed the first tie of the game at 13-13 from Madison Lowe’s shots at the free-throw line.

IVC answered back with its own by Shirley.

VanOstrand posted IVC’s final points for the quarter with a layup off a drive in the paint but a field goal by Dunlap put IVC back 18-16 going into intermission.

The Lady Grey Ghosts were outscored the last two quarter but kept it close with the Eagles.

Larson started the scoring in the third with a layup off a drive.

Dunlap remained ahead throughout the quarter but IVC kept the deficit to no more than six points when Dunlap added another two points to make it 30-24 with two seconds left.

VanOstrand was able to close the deficit to three points after a 3 in the right corner in the fourth.

Dunlap bounced back with an eight point run in the next four minutes before Johnson was able to get a bonus shot in to make it 41-30.

IVC posted six more points to Dunlap’s five for the remaining minutes but could not come back.

VanOstrand and Johnson led with nine points apiece. Shirley was next at seven.

“Our kids did the right things but when it came down to it, not having those two and us getting into foul trouble really hurt us,” Lowe said.

“It was a great year, good year but a disappointing year. We didn’t win as many as we thought we would win. But we have a good nucleus coming back and were going to change quite a few things,” Lowe said.
