Fields of dreams: Ranking Arizona's best high school baseball fields

No two Arizona high school baseball fields look the same. They all have their own identities, carved out by coaches, players, a community that cares.

The Arizona Republic is ranking the best high school baseball fields. The coaches nominated their fields.

High school fields of dreams

1. Horizon Huskies

It is old-school and yet new, great ambience, a crowd favorite with lights and a mini-major league-like clubhouse for the players. Husky Park is part of the incredible baseball tradition with the McDowell Mountain backdrop.

2. Desert Mountain Wolves

Incredible layout with the mountains in the background. Grass is as green and lush as you'll find anywhere. No wonder the Wolves' produce elite teams year in and year. Kids want to be on that field.

3. Chaparral Firebirds

This was the field that Jerry Dawson built. It was named after him after he retired, but for the first time this year in the program's long, rich history, there are lights. Great electronic scoreboard beyond the lef-center field wall. With the sunset settling in, and playing under the lights, it's dreamlike.

4. Gilbert Christian Knights

One of the smallest AIA schools has one of the nicest fields you'll find anywhere in the Valley. It's a new field this year. It's called Titan Solar Park. The infield is synthetic turf with an adjustable/moveable mound. It has a unique design with the fence jutted in at right-center field and it going deeper in right field. Beautiful.

"We had to rent fields in the past so this is a tremendous upgrade," coach Bob Hershey said. "This field is only here due in large part to the efforts of Jim Desmarchais (Gilbert Christian Schools superintendent) and a very generous donation from the great people at Titan Solar."

5. Mesa Mountain View Toros

The Toros have a Wrigley-like quality about their field with the ivy look all around the outfield fence. Great seating behind the  backstop.

6. Paradise Valley Trojans

This at one point was maybe the best field in the state. It was the brainchild of former coach Roy Muller. His former player, Ramon Figueroa, did a great job of keeping it up while he was the coach. Now it's in good hands with head coach Tim Crow. Great scoreboard, the flags in center make it stand out.

7. Glendale Mountain Ridge Lions

The Lions take great pride in their field with all hands on deck to make it one of most pleasing to the eye. They have the backdrop and the perfectly manicured grass to make it top 10.

8. Superior Panthers

What a view of the mountain behind center field. Great ambience.

9. Marcos de Niza Padres

The field is the first thing that catches the eye when entering the school.

"Our field sets the tone for the look of the campus," coach Matthew Courtney said. "It is the first thing you see when you enter campus or drive down Guadalupe Road. The field is maintained by the players, so they take pride in the appearance of their field."

10. Hamilton Huskies

There's a reason why they have one of the top high school programs in the nation, racking up state championships. It's a community effort, and they put as much work on maintaining the field as they do in the way they play.

11. Desert Ridge Jaguars

The logo behind home plate sucks you in. The views of the Superstitions Mountains are amazing. This year, on the left-field wall, coach Joseph Ponce started a hall/wall of fame featuring three former players.

12. Highland Hawks

The scoreboard alone makes you go, "Wow." The field is gorgeous with upgrades abound.

"From where the facility was when I got here almost two years ago to where it is now is unbelievable," coach Eric Kehoe said. "It has definitely been a collaborative effort on many people's parts. It is the field of dreams in my opinion."

13. Northwest Christian Crusaders

The field is nice and big. But when you turnaround, you see these purple seats with the awning and it pops. That puts them on this list.

14. Mesquite Wildcats

Night baseball brings out the community and they get see the players run around one one of the most beautiful field with the big blue logo behind the plate.

15. Flagstaff Eagles

All synthetic surface Eagle Field makes it pop. But is the mountains, especially when it's snow-capped, that makes you feel you're on another planet.

16. Mountain Pointe Pride

Gorgeous with the South Mountain in the background making it sparkle even more. Pride coach Jay Sferra said a lot of money has been put into the upkeep of this field of dreams.

17. Tolleson Wolverines

They’ve put so much work into the field since COVID-19 kept the players off of it since last year. They were allowed back in March and the players were greeted by one of the most beautiful field, crafted by long-time coach Scott Richardson.

18. Horizon Honors

Tucked in Ahwatukee, it's unique with both softball and baseball sharing the same field with a creative conversion. 

19. Notre Dame Saints

They have one of the most breathtaking fields, perfectly manicured in the infield and outfield. Not a bad bounce in sight.

20. Benjamin Franklin

One of the nicest 3A fields you'll find Coach Todd Cook is always getting compliments on the field from opposing coaches.

21. Douglas Bulldogs

It's called Cooper King Stadium. This old-school stadium has as a great a grandstands as you'll find at a high school. The mountain range in the background give it magical look.

22. Chino Valley

It has a sleek, majestic look to it, one of the best small-school fields in the state. Perfect infield, perfect outfield, always maintained to the highest degree.

23. Tempe Corona del Sol Aztecs

A sign warns players and fans that attending the baseball games  today 'could increase your risk of contracting Coronavirus' during the Borras Classic played at Corona del Sol High School on Mar. 14, 2020 in Tempe, Ariz.

This is a gorgeous complex with two fields next to each other. The centerpiece is amazing and makes it one of the top attractions in the West. It became a main field for the Borras Classic.

24. Greenway Demons

This was the high school home for former Angels star outfielder Tim Salmon. Out-of-state coaches who have come here for tournament often comment on it being the nicest field they've played on.

25. Desert Vista Thunder

It has great bleachers and gorgeous views of the scenery tucked in the Ahwatukee community.
