Potter runners keep pace at regional
The Morton girls cross country team and five boys individuals advanced to this weekend's Class 2A Notre Dame Sectional.
The Potters easily made the field on the girls' side with a third-place finish with 83 points Saturday at the Normal West Regional at Maxwell Park.
Morton narrowly missed out on the boys' half with an eighth-place standing with 160 points, but its top-five runners took all the individual spots available.
Senior Bridget Carius guided the Potter girls with a third-place overall standing in a time of 18:10.
She was the only athlete in the top six not from a Twin Cities program.
Junior Brooke Goodyear and freshman Bayley Selburg of Morton recorded identical 19:19s to place 14th and 15th, respectively.
Hannah Behle, a senior, was 23rd in 19:42, and the fifth Potter contestant in, sophomore Erika Gordon, also broke 20 minutes to wind up 27th.
Normal University, with three of the overall top-five competitors, won the girls' regional championship in dominating fashion.
The Morton boys were 14 points behind seventh-place Washington.
A time of 15:57 by sophomore Brady Carius led the Potters.
Seniors Quentin Young (16:36) and Luke Riffle (16:42) were six second apart in 28th and 31st places, respectively.
Senior Matt Lyons was 40th in 16:53, while Zack Siscoe, a freshman, clocked a 17:15, good for 46th.
The Potter quintet will run as individuals in the second postseason level.
U-High won the boys' title by 65 points. Four of its athletes were among the first-five finishers.
Postseason: Morton competes Saturday in the Notre Dame Sectional at Illinois Central College.
The girls' competition is at 10 a.m., with the boys' race beginning 45 minutes later.
The top-five teams and top-seven individuals not on a qualifying squad advance to the Nov. 3 Illinois High School Association state final at Detweiller Park.
Also, if the eighth, ninth or 10th place overall individual sectional finisher is not on a qualifying team, they will move on to state.
