Lady Ghosts fall to St. Bede

Justin Miller

The Illinois Valley Central volleyball team had a rough week when St. Bede game to town Sept. 20 and beat the Ghosts in their only game of the week.

“We struggled all the way and St. Bede had some pretty good blockers,” coach Lisa Miller said. “We had kind of a difficult time in that game.”

The teams traded points throughout the first set and neither team was able to build a clear advantage on the other.

Brooke Ratcliff and Hannah Scherer were able to keep the Lady Bruins from grabbing easy points, but the Ghosts could not build a lead of their own.

St. Bede, despite the hustle of the Ghosts, eventually pulled away to win, 26-24.

In the second set, the teams again played evenly matched again, with no side able to find the secret to the other’s defense.

Laura Hedden helped the Ghosts compete throughout the set by firing shots at the Lady Bruin defenders.

Hedden led the team with seven kills.

Despite the strong offensive showing, St. Bede pulled away at the end to win, 25-23.

“We need to improve our own blocking,” Miller said. “It is our setters job to try to get one on one with the blockers instead of one on two.”

The Ghosts next play at 5 p.m. Thursday at home.

“This week we have Manual and Rock Island Alleman,” Miller said. “We have already played Rock Island in the Wthersfield Tournament. We just need to do what we are capable of and we’ll be alright.”
