The Illinois Valley Central cross country team battled in the Kewanee Invitational Saturday.

The girls’ team finished second out of 15 teams and the boys’ finished third.

“The weather was beautiful and we took advantage of it,” coach Mike Themas said. “As a team, we are running well.

“The big surprise in the girls’ meet was freshman Molly Wang placing fourth for us. She just came out of nowhere.

IVC’s No. 1 runner, Bethany Espinosa, was running sick but still placed third for IVC.

“Liz Willford looked good placing first for us.

“Freshman Erica Larson was strong, placing second for us. Senior Jessica Owdom finished our scoring by placing fifth for us.

“The boys’ top five placed in the top 30, which was very good,” said Themas.”

Ryan Greskoviak placed eighth overall and was IVC’s No. 1 runner, followed by Caleb Magee, Dusty Seckler, Drew Zadrzynski and Liam Price.

“Caleb has been our most improved boy this year,” said Themas.

The team next races at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Prairie Central.
