The girls’ track team raced in the Dunlap Relays Thursday but it was cut short due to dangerous weather moving into the area.

“The Dunlap meet was a relay meet, which means that all running events are relays,” coach Gwen Hemstreet said. “This past week was also our spring break, so we were short handed on the team. As a result, the times weren’t our best, but it gave some of the girls a chance to do things they don’t normally do.”

Haley White jumped 15’2 ½ in the long jump, a personal record, and 33’2 in the triple jump, also a personal record.

“This was a very unusual week and the main thing to take from this week was just how to deal with the weather and still compete,” Hemstreet said. “Also, how to deal with different girls stepping in relays to help out the whole team.”

The team next competes at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Elmwood.

“In the final stretch, we just need to focus on our practices and every opportunity to compete,” Hemstreet said. “The girls need to make an extra effort to be present at both practices and meets to help them achieve their best performances for the season. Our main focus right now is Sectionals, which is May 13. This is the only meet they can qualify for State.”
