IVC softball cruises through week
The Illinois Valley Central softball team started another successful week by taking down East Peoria, 2-1, at home March 28.
Junior Jenna Noland took the mound for the Ghosts and grabbed her fourth win by striking out 11 batters and walking only two.
In the first inning, Marci Fletcher hit a single and reached home when Amy Berchtold smacked an RBI double.
After East Peoria tied the game, the Ghosts added another run in the fifth inning when Ellen Pearson hit a double that sent Fletcher around to score.
“That was a gutsy performance,” coach Mike Berchtold said. “East Peoria is a great team and we did a good job to not get frustrated and to come back in that game.”
Shelby Sutherland helped the team by going three-for-three from the plate.
The team hosted Orion on Thursday and won a 3-0 shutout.
“That was another game where we did a great job of hitting,” Berchtold said.
Noland again took the mound and struck out six and walked none.
Kathleen Gauwitz reached base on a double in the first inning and scored the first run when Berchtold hit a single.
The team scored a run in the second inning on an error and, in the third inning, Fletcher reached base on a double and scored when Pearson hit an RBI single.
The team headed to Dunlap Saturday and split a doubleheader.
The Eagles won the first game, 2-1.
Noland started for the team and struck out 11 hitters during a dominant performance.
The team scored one run in the first inning when Rachel Grochowsky reached base on an error and Fletcher smacked a single to drive her in.
“That game came down to the final pitch and their hitter had a triple with two strikes and two outs in the last inning to win it,” Berchtold said.
IVC bounced back in the second game and won a close, 9-8, decision over Dunlap.
Berchtold made her first start of the season and delivered a stellar three strikeout performance as she garnered her first win.
Lexi Hoffman had one hit and sent two runners to home plate.
Pearson added to the score by blasting a two-run homerun that also scored Berchtold.
IVC (6-1) next plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Bede.
