The Illinois Valley Central boys’ cross country team finished second at the Amboy Invitational Oct. 11 out of 48 teams and the girls finished 24th.

“I was pleased with the team’s effort today,” coach Mike Themas said. “To place second with this number of schools is great.

“A big surprise was Caleb Magee finishing second for us. This is Caleb’s first year running cross country and he was just gotten better and better.

“Bethany Espinosa, our No. 1 runner, didn’t run due to a concussion from a car accident.

“Finishing No. 1 for the girls was freshman Hannah Williamson, who had a fine time of 21:00.

“Senior Emily Pence ran her best race of the year to finish third for the girls.

On Saturday, the Ghosts headed to Rock Falls to race in the North Central Illinois Conference meet.

Both teams finished fourth in the conference, despite expectations for the girls to finish third.

Espinosa ran in her first meet since the accident and Williamson ran sick.

“The girls that did run did have a good effort.”

“On the boys race, I ran our freshmen/sophomore boys at the varsity level.

“They also did a nice job of competing.

“The No.1 runner for the girls, Bethany Espinosa, and the boys’ No.1 runner, Ryan Greskoviak, earned second team All-Conference honors from their finish in the race.”

The Ghosts next race in the Regional at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eureka.
