Girls’ season starts off strong

The Illinois Valley Central High School girls’ team opened its 2009 indoor track season Friday at a 26-team invitational at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center.

Teams from across the state relished a chance to get out of the halls and onto a real track.

The Lady Ghosts made a good showing with Mikayla Vail continuing her solid effort in the long jump (14-4), placing fifth, and fourth in the triple jump (31-10), despite having only one practice.

Tawnee McGann showed excellence in the 55 hurdles (9.3), finishing fifth, and Mackenzie Swanson threw 26-8 in the shot put.

Rachel Wargo ran a personal record of 6:39.9 in the 1600, and Stephany Johnson ran a solid 400 in 1:10.3, placing sixth.

In the 4x800, Emily Pence, Wargo, Jessica Owdom and Johnson ran a respectable 11:59 to finish eighth, and came back in the 4x200 with a 2:20.9.

Newcomers Emma Hoerr, E. Pence, Rachel Pence and Owdom all tasted their first high school and indoor track competition.

“Hoerr’s 28-10 performance in the shot was definitely the surprise performance of the night,” said coach Bob Prout.

E. Pence turned in IVC’s best 1600 of the night at 6:38.0, and Owdom ran a 6:44.7 in the 1600.

R. Pence pole vaulted 6-6, placing 10th, despite not having a chance to vault over the bar yet this year.

The girls’ next meet is March 6 at the Newman Invite at the Westwood Sports Complex in Sterling.
