After a thrilling second-place finish at Regional and qualifying one member for State at Sectional, the Ghost wrestling season came to an end Saturday at State for senior Chris Green.

“Chris had a great year,” coach Matt Russell said. “I think he surpassed a lot of goals he had set for himself. It was nice to see all of his hard work pay off.”

Green started his postseason run by placing at the Princeton Regional and then finished second in the 285-pound division at the Oregon Sectional, sending him to State.

On Saturday, Green lost his opening match of the State tournament, thus ending his wrestling career at Illinois Valley Central.

“I think the young guys on the team can look at Chris and see what dedication and hard work does for an athlete,” Russell said. “He is a great leader and will be missed.”

This season was Russell’s first year as head coach of the Ghosts.

In Russell’s premiere year, the Ghosts took second place at Regional and sent 11 team members to Sectional.

“We had a good year and will look to build on that for the future,” Russell said. “The seniors will be missed, and it will be interesting to see which returners step into the leadership roles that need to be filled.”
