The IVC boys varsity soccer team had another week of strong play and racked up two more games in the win column as they advanced to 5-0-3 on the year.

On Tuesday, the IVC boys varsity soccer team played at Mendota.

In every aspect of play, Monday’s game was dominated by the Grey Ghosts as they won 7-1.

Three different players scored on Mendota as IVC showed off its offensive prowess. Junior midfielder Chris Olivera led the team with three goals, sophomore midfielder Matt Welch had two goals, and senior midfielder Alex Olivera had two goals.

Senior forward Marty Heredia led the team with three assists. Welch, Alex Olivera and Chris Olivera each added one assist to the team’s winning effort.

Senior goalie Nolan Wilson had two saves on three shots as IVC’s defense kept the ball away from their own goal much of the game.

On Thursday, the Ghosts traveled to play Illini Bluffs, where IVC won 2-1.

IVC’s two goals came from Chris Olivera and Alex Olivera.

Alex Olivera and junior midfielder/forward Shane Hornibrook each had one assist.

Wilson had a strong day defensively as he made four blocks off of five shots by Illini Bluffs.

“The team had a very good week of soccer,” first year head coach Patrick Sell said. “We grew as a unit and hope to continue to grow through this tough week of soccer.”

This week may be a little easier as the team’s game at Geneseo was canceled Tuesday due to flooding. The team travels to play Metamora at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Saturday’s game against Peoria Christian was cancelled due to the rain but is rescheduled for Oct. 3.

Corrections: Last week it was mentioned that Nolan Wilson is a freshman. He is a senior. Also, there are five seniors and five juniors on the varsity team.
