The Illinois Valley Central High School boys and girls cross country teams lost their meet with Richwoods and Notre Dame Sept. 9.

The girls lost with 50 points vs. Notre Dame’s 15 and 42 points to Richwoods 17. The boys lost with 48 points to Notre Dame’s 15 and 46 points to Richwoods 17.

“Although we didn’t beat either Notre Dame or Richwoods, we ran better than we did last week,” said coach Mike Themas.

“It is our team goal to improve each week. Notre Dame has one of the best teams in the Peoria area. They were impressive. Our girls continue to run in a pack which will pay off for us later down the road. Our top seven girls went 11, 18, 21, 22, 23, 25 and 26. I was glad to see Cecily

Stedwill run No. 3 for us. Marcie Furuholmen continued running No. 1 with Rachel Wargo No. 2.

“There were 49 girl runners and 70 boys. Our No. 1 boy runner, David Weber, ran a good two miles and then faded to finish ninth. Danny Kendzierski has been consistently No. 2 and ran a good race. Corey Gondeck, Alex Tarantino and Caleb Bjerk continue to improve.”

Sara James, Tawnie McGann, Weber and Kendzierski all set personal records for the course.

Girls results were: 11. Furuholmen (22:00); 18. Wargo (22:57); 21. Stedwill (23:26); 22. Emily Pence (23:34); 23. Sara James (23:43); 25. Jessica Owdom (23:50); 26. McGann (24:01); 28. Kelsey Thornton (24:34); 34. Mikayla Vail (26:05); 41. Lindsey James (26:33); and Bethany Espinosa (31:25).

Boys results were: 9. Weber, (17:53); 22. Kendzierski, 19:27; 34. Gondeck (20:21); 35. Tarantino (20:25); 41. Bjerk (20:48); 48. Miles Bannister (21:13); 50. Richard Mayerhofer; and 53. Alex Weistart (21:25).

The teams also competed at the Woodruff Invitational Sept. 13 where the girls placed 19th of 37 teams, and the boys placed 24th of 37 teams.

“With all the rain — we had and a college meet the night before — the course at Detweiller was a muddy mess,” said Themas.

“I was pleased with the team’s effort. David Weber had his best meet of the year, placing 26th overall. David missed a medal by one place. Alex Tarantino also had his best meet placing third for us. Sarah James looked good, placing second for us.”

Competing at the meet were 225 boys and 193 girls.

Girls results included: 55. Furuholmen (22:17); 95. S. James (23:46); 112. Stedwill (24:14); 144. McGann (25:07); 150. Owdom (25:16); 153. Pence (25:25); and 183. Vail (28:48).
