The 2008 volleyball season at Chillicothe Junior High brought many rewards for the seventh-grade girls’ team and their coaches.

At the State tournament in Assumption March 11, the team captured the third-place 3A trophy.

They finished the season with a 27-1 record, losing their only game to the eventual State first-place team, Deer Creek-Mackinaw. That set a new school record for wins.

On their path to an outstanding year, the Lady Mustangs won the Two Rivers Conference, the Chillicothe Invitational Tournament, the Regional and the Sectional.

At their final State appearance, CJH downed Shelbyville Moulton, 25-8, 25-17.

“I was so proud of the way the girls came back and played well in the third-place game,” said coach Sara Kinney.

They served well, missing only one serve receive all night. They had 38 spike attempts and 10 kills.”

Jessica Childers led scoring with 14 points and five ace serves. Laura Hedden and Lindi Fletcher each had three kills.

“The girls worked hard all season,” said Kinney. “They never gave up, and they kept on improving through every game.”

The team will host its mother-daughter game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at CEC, with awards to follow.
