A man is in custody after police allege he shot at an officer and caused a three-vehicle collision Friday morning.

According to Sgt. Andy Williams, Phoenix police spokesman, a uniformed officer was driving a police motorcycle southbound on the I-17 near Yorkshire Drive around 9 a.m. when a blue sedan passed, speeding.

As the officer activated his lights and siren to signal the car to stop, the driver pointed and fired a weapon, Williams said.

The suspect fled and exited the highway at Greenway Road, causing a crash with a large rental truck and a white SUV.

Williams said more officers arrived and were able to detain the suspect before he was taken to the hospital. The suspect’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and he remains unidentified by police.

None of the occupants of the other vehicles were seriously injured, nor was the officer.

Upon his release from the hospital, Williams said the suspect will be arrested and booked into a Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.
