Other Dawg comes to Mossville

The Mossville location where The Other Dawg’s second restaurant will be located is currently being prepared for the opening.

The Other Dawg is making its way to Mossville.

“We think it’s a good area,” Dave Streitmatter, the co-owner, said. “It always seems like they did good business down there in the area and it seems like the area needs something now. There’s not a lot going on as far as food options right now.”

The restaurant opened its first location at 4408 N. Prospect Road in Peoria Heights in 2011.

“It’s going to have ice cream and all your typical fare,” Streitmatter said. “We also have our own labeled hot dog sauce that is pretty unique. That’s what has made our business in the Heights so successful so we are obviously going to take that to the new location.”

That meat sauce, Streitmatter said, is what makes eating at The Other Dawg unique.

“Our meat sauce is the key,” Streitmatter said. “There was a place years ago in downtown Peoria called Hunter’s and there’s the Velvet Freeze. This sauce is kind of a cross between those two. It’s very unique and people really like it.”

So far, Streitmatter said the response from the customers in Peoria Heights has been good.

“The response has been very positive,” Streitmatter said. “We have built up the business so we are expanding. We are limited up there on space and are doing a good volume of business so we thought we would try expanding.”

That expansion, Streitmatter said, is a natural response of how the business has done so far.

“We had the idea for the business and the meat sauce so we were pretty excited about it,” Streitmatter said. “We wanted to see how it worked. We went up there and it worked well. Now we want to try some other areas.”

When The Other Dawg opens in Mossville, the menu will be expanded from what it is in Peoria Heights.

“We have all your ice cream treats, tenderloins and your normal sandwiches,” Streitmatter said. “We will have more than the Other Dawg in the Heights. We will have chicken sandwiches, fried food, Italian beef and other food.”

In addition, Streitmatter said, the new location will try a new feature.

“It’s a seasonal business but we are thinking about supplying coffee and pastries in the morning and, if it’s successful, we might do that year round,” Streitmatter said. “Other than that, it is seasonal. We will probably be open about six months or, weather permitting, seven. It’s a weather permitting business since we have no indoor seating.”

Compared to previous businesses at the Mossville location that have not worked out, Streitmatter said he wants The Other Dawg to stand out.

“Since we have been down there people have been stopping by and giving us a lot of feedback,” Streitmatter said. “They say that the service at that location used to be poor and that portions were spotty. No one knew what they were getting and ended up waiting too long. It’s not going to be like that with us. We are well staffed and well ran.”

The Other Dawg will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Coffee and pastries will be available from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The tentative opening date is July 14.
