Eureka College homecoming fireworks open to public

Eureka College will open its annual homecoming torch parade, bonfire, pep rally and fireworks display to the public. Activities will begin at9 p.m. Oct. 3in the parking lot on South Burgess Avenue. The 15-minute fireworks display will be at approximately10 p.m.

Homecoming activities with the theme “Superheroes: Unleashing the Power of You” will take place Sept. 28 through Oct. 4.

Events that are open to the public are:

Sunday, Sept. 28         A panel-painting competition among student organizations will be fromnoon to 6 p.m.on the lawn at Burgess Hall on College Avenue. A free powder puff football game among student organizations will be at6 p.m.behind Reagan Physical Education Center on Reagan Drive.

Wednesday, Oct. 1    The women’s soccer team will play Rockford College at3 the soccer field on Dickinson Drive. At7 p.m.a lip sync competition will take place at Cerf Center.

Thursday, Oct. 2         At 7 p.m.a student talent competition featuring guest emcee comedian Arvin Mitchell will take place at the Cerf Center. Melick Library will hold its annual book sale from2 to 11 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 3              Melick Library book sale will continue from9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Homecoming convocation will be at10:30 the Cerf Center, where the homecoming royal court will be announced. Competitive games among student organizations will begin at 1:30 p.m. behind Reagan Center. A volleyball game against Westminster College will be at7 Reagan Center.  An Athletic Hall of Fame induction will take place at6 the Cerf Center.  

Saturday, Oct. 4          Homecoming Day festivities will begin with a hospitality center from9 to 10 Burrus Dickinson Hall. A reception for theatre alumni will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at Pritchard Theatre, where theatre professor emeritus William Davis will be inducted into the Fine and Performing Arts Hall of Honor at9:15 a.m.Melick Library will continue its book sale from8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.The volleyball team will play Spalding University at10 a.m.and Westminster College at2 Reagan Center.

The homecoming parade, with environmental studies professor Renée Mullen as grand marshal, will step off from downtown Eureka at10 a.m.and can be viewed from College Avenue on campus. Parade entries from the community are being sought. To participate, contact parade chairman Aaron Meyer   

The women’s and men’s soccer teams will play Webster College at1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, at the soccer field on Dickinson Drive.

A hospitality area at the football field will include children’s activities and a silent auction. The Eureka College Red Devils will play the Martin Luther College Knights at1 McKinzie Field. Half-time will include introductions of homecoming royalty and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. The winner of the Old Elm trophy for the student organization earning the most points for homecoming activities will be announced.
