The school calendar for the 2011-12 school year was approved at the April 12 Illinois Valley Central board of education meeting.

In August, teachers will start on Aug. 15, with the students starting one day later. Christmas break will start on Dec. 23 and will go until Jan. 8.

Spring break will go from April 6 through April 16, 2012, with the last day being planned for May 23, 2012, barring no snow days.

Two hirings and eight resignations were also accepted at the meeting. Jeffrey Joyce was hired as the transportation director, while Keeley Ruhland was hired as a sixth grade teacher at Mossville.

Out of the eight resignations, five were from Mossville. Katie Horton, junior high language arts teacher, Pam Fady and Melissa Markley, Response to Intervention aides, will resign at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Alex Razo, the girls basketball assistant coach, resigned effective immediately, and Anita Bausman, a special education aide, will resign effective May 1.

At the high school, both Ed Tallon, social science teacher, and Dave Lawson, scholastic bowl coach, will resign at the end of the year. Bus driver Tracy Davis resigned as of April 1.

In other board news:

• Superintendent Dr. Nick Polyak presented the fire marshal’s inspection of the school district.

Polyak said the marshal only found two “minor discrepancies.”

“We have a gas shutoff, but they would like them in each individual classroom (at the high school),” he said.

The other discrepancy was for a storage unit for gas in the auto shop.

“Overall, the condition of each school is outstanding, and your staff is to be commended for their work on keeping the school safe,” the report said.

• The curriculum committee and facilities committee gave their reports.

The curriculum committee recommended that IVC Director of Choirs Angie Dorough be moved permanently to the high school.

“Right now, the choir teacher at the high school also teaches junior high choir,” Polyak said. “We are going to pull her and make her position full time here because student enrollment is spiking in choir, so we need her here.”

The district will start the search for a junior high teacher soon.

Meanwhile, the facilities committee is planning to update the outside of Mossville School in the next few years.

• Two overnight trips were approved for students. The first trip approved was for high school students going to France on April 15-24. The other trip was for band students to go to Kentucky on May 5-8.

The band director gave a presentation about the trip, which will have the band marching in the Pegasus Parade at Louisville, Ky., and performing at King’s Island. The band will also visit the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Louisville Zoo and see a horse race at Lexington.

The presentation also showed off the current conditions of the marching band coats. Band officials plan to purchase new coats by the 2012 school year.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at the high school library. The meeting will swear in the new members.
