The Chillicothe Police Department investigates the scene of an accident killing a Chillicothe man.

An accident on Plaza Drive about 1:30 p.m. Thursday claimed the life of a Chillicothe man.

Terry M. Vinson, 56, of 1611 N. Hoyt St., died after being run over on his bicycle by a reportedly empty 1995 Mack cement truck owned by LaHood Construction Inc. of East Peoria.

According to Chillicothe Police Department reports, the driver of the truck, Jose E. Vargas of Peoria, was southbound in the 200 block of Plaza Drive going about 15 mph when he saw Vinson riding his bike northbound on the right shoulder of the road,.

As Vinson passed the truck on the passenger side, Vargas said he heard a noise and felt a thump.

He said he had not noticed anything in the roadway, so he stopped and found Vinson lying on the roadway behind the truck.

Police found damage to the front wheel tire of the bicycle.

A witness at Riverside Chevrolet-Oldsmobile told police that the bicycle suddenly turned into the path of the cement truck just before the rear tires.

Vinson was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:20 p.m.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said an autopsy revealed the cause of death as multiple crushing injuries.
