A Chillicothe man was killed after he walked into traffic and was hit by two cars Friday night, according to authorities.

James D. Crutcher, 52, of 4528 E. Lakeland Lane walked into northbound traffic at Illinois Route 29 and Knox Street in Rome about 7:25 p.m., according to Peoria County Sheriff’s Lt. Jason Buckley.

A vehicle in the slower lane of traffic tried but couldn’t avoid hitting Crutcher. The collision knocked him into the other lane of traffic, where he was struck by another vehicle, Buckley said.

According to Crutcher’s family, he had a history of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said.

A Peoria County sheriff’s deputy reportedly had picked up Crutcher at Route 29 and Stevenson Lane in Peoria County around 6:20 p.m. and dropped him off at Kroger at 603 S. Fourth St. in Chillicothe, she said.

It’s not known what caused the man to walk into traffic. The autopsy determined he died of severe multiple blunt traumatic injuries, Ingersoll said. Results of toxicology tests will be available in about two weeks.
