ICC'S deconstruction program registration is open
EAST PEORIA — Registration is now open for Illinois Central College’s Deconstruction Certificate Program for summer and fall 2014 semesters. The summer semester begins June 9, and the fall semester begins August 18. Scholarships are also available.
The program began in January 2014 as part of a statewide grant from the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) to promote green economy initiatives.
Students in the program combine online coursework with hands-on learning experiences such as touring job sites, connecting with local employers, and completing a service learning project. Most students can expect to complete the seven credit hour program in one semester. Successful completion of the program will prepare individuals for entry level positions on construction, deconstruction, and demolition or material salvage crews and contributes to an associate degree in Architectural Construction Technology.
The Deconstruction and Building Materials Salvage and Reuse Certificate program also includes certification in Lead RRP (Repair Renovation and Painting) and is designed to prepare students for employment in the deconstruction and building material salvage, reuse and recycling industries. Its goal is to provide options to unemployed, under-employed and other workers, as well as develop career pathways to meet industry needs.
ICC’s Regional Coordinator for the program, Diana Fuller, says she is excited to see the first few students complete the program and to get more people familiar with a career which allows graduates to serve their communities.
“The idea behind deconstruction is certainly not new, but the name what is unfamiliar,” Fuller says. “I think the program will serve the college and the community very well as the area continues to pursue and implement sustainable development.”
The recommended course sequence includes:
- · First 4 weeks (summer semester)/First 8 weeks (fall semester):
o DECON 101: Introduction to Deconstruction (1 credit hour)
o DECON 102: Deconstruction Methods and Materials (2 credit hours)
- · Second 4 weeks (summer semester)/Second 8 weeks (fall semester):
o DECON 103: Principles of Deconstruction Assessment (2 credit hours)
o DECON 104: Deconstruction Project (2 credit hours)
People interested in working with their hands, developing knowledge of construction and deconstruction, wood working, conservation, home remodeling, as well as recent high school students and entrepreneurs may be interested in this opportunity.
ICC also is seeking employers wanting to send their employees for training and those willing to donate their job sites for hands-on, lab experience.
