Jewish Federation hosting remembrance event tonight

Yom HaShoah Service of Remembrance, will take place tonight, April 28, at 5614 N. University, Peoria.

Gather at the end of the parking lot on Austin

The March of the Living begins at 6:30 p.m. Program to begin at 6:45 p.m.

Guest Speaker: Walter Reed

Walter Reed was born Werner Rindsberg in 1924 and raised in Bavaria. Following Krystallnacht his father was taken to Dachau. In June 1939, at the age of 15, Reed was put on a train to Brussels as part of a children’s refugee rescue program. In May 1940 Germans invaded Belgium; the children had to be moved. Reed, and 100 other children were put on a freight train and began their journey to France, where they were hidden in a remote farm area. Reed was able to leave France in 1941, and was drafted in the U.S. army in 1943.
