Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to make first trip of season March 25

On March 25th, 2014, Land of Lincoln Honor Flight will honor 88 veterans by taking them on a no-expense, day-long trip to Washington, D.C., so they may visit and reflect at their national memorials. 

Aboard the charter 737 airplane flying from Springfield, on this first flight of the 2014 season, will be eight soldiers from World War II, 37 from the Korean War era and 43 of the Vietnam War era, with all branches of the military represented. 

Transported on three tour buses, the itinerary will include the World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, National Air & Space Museum, Marine & Air Force Memorials, Pentagon and concluding at Arlington National Cemetery, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and Changing of the Guard. 

On this 25th flight of LLHF, accompanying the Veterans will be 71 guardian escorts and three bus captains.

Veterans on this flight come from the Illinois cities of Alton, Argenta, Ashland, Bartonville, Bethalto, Bloomington, Bluffs, Bowen, Bunker Hill, Carthage, Champaign, Chillicothe, Clinton, Danvers, Decatur, Divernon, East Peoria, Essex, Forsyth, Girard, Godfrey, Highland, Hillsboro, Irving, Jacksonville, Latham, LeRoy, Lincoln, Metamora, Middletown, Moro, Morrisonville, Mt Pulaski, Nilwood, Nokomis, Normal, Peoria, Petersburg, Pittsfield, Pleasant Plains, Pontiac, Riverton, Roanoke, Rushville, Saunemin, Shelbyville, Sherman, Shipman, Sibley, Spaulding, Springfield, Taylorville, Virden and Wood River.

The public is invited to welcome home the veterans when they return to the Springfield Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport arriving around 9:30 p.m. It is suggested to be to the airport by 8:30 p.m., and wear red, white and blue to show appreciation, or bring small American flags, balloons, etc.

Veteran applications continue to be accepted for future flights, with priority given in the following order:World War II ~ a soldier enlisted by 12/31/1946

Korean War Era ~ 01/01/1947 to 12/31/1957

Vietnam War Era ~ 01/01/1958 to 05/07/1975

Because every veteran flies with a guardian escort, a trained volunteer who ensures the veteran’s comfort and safety throughout their special day in Washington, D.C., applications for future guardians are also being accepted.

Land of Lincoln Honor Flight is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, receiving no federal or state funding.  The donations, sponsorships, fund raising, and efforts of many individuals and businesses have allowed LLHF to honor this flight of veterans.
