Kroger launches multi-state Pink Ribbon fundraising campaign for ACS

The Kroger Co.’s Central Division launched a multi-state, fund-raising campaign on behalf of the American Cancer Society on Sept. 26.  

The “pink ribbon scan” will run in all 138 Central Division stores through Oct. 31.  

All 138 Kroger Central Division stores, located primarily in Indiana and Illinois, will be selling $1 scans on behalf of the American Cancer Society during the month of October.  All proceeds will be given to ACS. There is no limit to these cash contributions. Scan codes can be scanned multiple times to allow larger donations.

According to Kroger Central Division Public Affairs Manager John Elliott, “Our multi-state partnership with the American Cancer Society continues to grow in rewarding and valuable ways. This scan promotion fund-raiser is just one of the many ways we collaborate with the American Cancer Society throughout the year. Their efforts in the fight against cancer are helping many customers and associates in the Kroger family who are directly affected by this terrible disease and we are extremely grateful to them.”

The extra assistance is something that the American Cancer Society appreciates.

“By serving as a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer national team for the American Cancer Society, Kroger is making a significant impact in the fight to end breast cancer,” explained Alix Shaer, national director of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society.  

“The overwhelming support of multiple fund-raisers throughout the year by Kroger associates and customers allows us to extend our life-saving mission to even more local residents, not only in Indiana and Illinois, but in communities across the country.  Kroger is truly helping us create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.”

Kroger also is in the midst of the company’s annual “Giving Hope a Hand” cause marketing campaign, which raises $3 million to support breast cancer programs serving our local communities and began Sept. 23.  

Since its inception in 2006, this program has generated more than $21 million to assist breast cancer education, services, treatment, and research in local communities served by The Kroger Co.’s family of stores.  The campaign is collaboration including 1,600 items from 36 Kroger vendor partners, as well as Kroger’s own food manufacturing plants.

A complete list of participating vendors is available at Kroger donates a share of the sale price on these items to the campaign.  

The vendor partners also donate a share of the sale price to the campaign from national and corporate brand items sold exclusively in Kroger’s more than 2,400 stores nationwide.

An additional component of the “Giving Hope a Hand” campaign is a special website,, sharing stories of hope, inspiration and survival from 48 Kroger associate survivors.  

A Facebook page,, Twitter feed and You Tube video channel reinforce the website and visits to the Facebook page will trigger additional donations to cancer organizations.

Kroger was recognized with the 2012 Gold HALO Award by the Cause Marketing Forum for the annual Sharing Courage campaign. The American Cancer Society’s regional office in Fort Wayne and Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana receive a share of the “Giving Hope a Hand” funds, in addition to their proceeds from Cancer Day.

In Kroger Central Division, the Sharing Courage campaigns shares the brave personal stories of store manager Debby Duke at the Twin Aire Drive store in Indianapolis and food service manager at the Main Street store in Plainfield, Indiana, Shannon Meador-Hoock.

Both associates are featured not only on Special K packaging, but on billboards, in-store signage and other advertising.  Shannon is on the Special K cereal bar package and Debby is on the Special K protein meal bar package.

The Kroger Co. has been serving local communities for 129 years.
