It may have taken 11 years, but Jeff Barker is now back at Dunlap High School.

Barker, who coached the Eagles from 1996-99, will take over the head coach position for the boys basketball team.

“I think his familiarity with the district was big,” Athletic Director Duane Peterson said. “The fact that he’s been really successful with the middle school level also helped. He has some familiarity with the families here.”

Barker stepped down from the high school team in 1999 to get his administrative degree. He was the assistant principal at Dunlap High School for two years before returning to teach middle school math and coach basketball at Dunlap Middle School and then Dunlap Valley Middle School.

“Jeff’s just a real positive person, and the first time he left it was his decision to leave and do something else,” Peterson said.

Barker, who had a 33-53 record during his three seasons with the high school team, will also be teaching high school math. Peterson was hopeful that former coach Rick Schertz would remain at the high school.

Schertz went 46-80 in five seasons.

Before coming to Dunlap, Barker coached Robinson for five seasons, finishing with a 86-53 record.
