Senior Sophie Hoffman, left, and sophomore Molly Mathes prepare to play a doubles match.

The Richwoods tennis Sectionals Saturday and Sunday gave Dunlap hope for a State win, but illness snatched that away.

No. 1 doubles seed Sophie Hoffman and Molly Mathes beat Washington Saturday to place in the semi-finals Sunday.

“Being named the No. 1 seed for doubles is a huge honor,” coach Pat Gornik said.

Sophomore Mathes played while sick Saturday.

“It went really well. The first match was a little rough, but we came back,” Mathes said.

“We played our game and she pulled it out because she’s so sick,” senior Hoffman said.

Gornik said the doubles team has had an up and down season.

“They’ve had some  great play and then lost some they shouldn’t have. They’ve taken their bruises, but they’ve learned,” he said.
