River closed, Red Cross Shelter available

The Coast Guard announced this afternoon that the Illinois River is closed to all recreational and commercial traffic from Peoria (mile marker 160) to Chillicothe (mile marker 181).

For those displaced by the flood, the American Red Cross is assisting residents in Chillicothe with an emergency shelter at First United Methodist Church, 1023 N. Sixth St.

Those in need of a shelter may call the Red Cross at 677-7272.

Volunteers also are traveling to homes along the Illinois River to assist residents with information about the Red Cross and flooding.
