Area provides plenty of haunts for Halloween

Spider hill

WHEN: 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in October; WHERE: Three Sisters Park, 17189 N. Illinois State Route 29, Chillicothe; PRICE: $8 per person, per attraction or $20 for an unlimited pass for one person; DESCRIPTION: Spider Hill is in its 13th year scaring area residents. Patrons can walk the 3/4 mile "Trail of Terror" through the woods or head through the newly renovated haunted house, "Massacre Mansion." For those looking for Halloween fun that is a little less hair-raising, there will also be a general store, face painting and "Fright Theater," where children's Halloween movies will be shown in the "Boo Barn."

Howl-oween Spook-tacular

WHEN: 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 31; WHERE: Fondulac Plaza, East Peoria; PRICE: Free to children 12 and under with a parent; DESCRIPTION: The 26th annual Howl-oween Spook-tacular will provide trick-or-treating in the Fondulac Plaza. Children are encouraged to visit participating merchants for candy and treats. The Tazewell County Jaycees will also provide the Trunk-N-Treat and there will be a fire engine and police car on display.

Wildlife scary park

WHEN: 5 to 9 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m. for Merry-Not-So-Scary Oct. 19-21 and Oct. 26-28; 9 p.m. to midnight Oct. 27 for the adult night, Prowl and Howl; WHERE: Wildlife Prairie Park State Park, 3826 N. Taylor Road, Hanna City; PRICE: $8 for non-members, $7 for members. Children under 1 and parking are free. The Prowl and Howl costs $5 for members and $13 for non-members; DESCRIPTION: Wildlife Scary Park has been scaring up a good time for families for over 20 years. During the early part of the night, younger children can attend for a more gentler experience. During the later hours, the thrills get ramped up for kids who like a good scare. Attendees can ride the Train-sylvania Express ride through the park, get something to eat at Frank-n-Steins and head through the Carn-E-vil with games, rides, face painting, crafts, movies, bonfires and storytelling. There will also be trick-or-treating in the Ghoul-y-Whopper Subdivision and a new attraction, the Boo-levard of Scarecrows. Also new this year is an adult night called Prowl and Howl. Adults dressed in their best monster makeup can dance and mingle to the sounds of local band "South Side Cindy."


WHEN: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 20; WHERE: Peoria Zoo, 2218 N. Prospect Road, Peoria; PRICE: $5 for members and $6 for non-members; DESCRIPTION: Howl-Zoo-Ween, an annual event, offers a trick-or-treat trail through the Africa exhibit, magic show and more in a family friendly environment. There will also be a costume contest at 7 p.m.

Spooktacular and merchant's trick-or-treat

WHEN: 4 to 6:30 p.m. for the Spooktacular and 3 to 5 p.m. for the Merchant's Trick or Treat, both Oct. 26; WHERE: The Merchant's Trick-or-Treat is at businesses through Chillicothe and the Spooktacular is at Pearce Community Center, 610 W. Cedar St., Chillicothe; PRICE: Admission is free; DESCRIPTION: The Spooktacular at Pearce Community Center, entering its 22nd year, will feature carnival games by M&K parties, a flashlight obstacle course, balloon animals by Unique Twist, a costume contest, food and more. Tickets will be sold at the door. The Merchant's Trick-or-Treat, sponsored by the Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce, is a trick-or-treat event held throughout Chillicothe where trick-or-treaters can visit participating merchants for special treats.

Haunted Infirmary

WHEN: 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Friday in October and 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Saturday in October; WHERE: The Old Pollack Hospital Building, 4500 Enterprise Drive, Bartonville; PRICE: $20 DESCRIPTION The Haunted Infirmary is a terrifying trip through one of the buildings in the old Peoria State Hospital buildings. There are limited tickets sold for each hour, each night. To purchase tickets, visit Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

Dungeon of Darkness

WHEN: 7 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Oct. 10-31; WHERE: 212 N. Capital St., Pekin; PRICE: $7; DESCRIPTION: The Dungeon of Darkness is a weekly haunted house in Pekin featuring costumed creeps and clowns designed to scare even the most scare-proof.

Witches Walk

WHEN: 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27; WHERE: Fondulac Farm Park, 305 Neumann Drive, East Peoria PRICE: Adults, $3 and children, $2.50; DESCRIPTION: This event is an illuminated walk for children who want to have some Halloween fun without the scares.

Spook hollow

WHEN: 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27; WHERE: 613 LaSalle Blvd., Marquette Heights PRICE: $20 for Spook Hollow Trail and M.C. Manor; DESCRIPTION: The Spook Hollow trail is in its 33rd year of spreading fear in central Illinois. Those visiting Spook Hollow start in M.C. Manor and escape into the Spook Hollow trail. For an extra $10, customers can skip the lines.
