Clients of HairMasters Unlimited are used to seeing four-legged friends around the shop from time to time, but the women took it to another level with a recent fundraiser.

“First and foremost, we are all dog lovers,” said HairMasters owner Donna Sarver. “Second of all, we believe that The ARK does a wonderful thing, and we appreciate the fact that it’s a no-kill shelter. And, we hope this event makes people realize there are a lot of animals that want to love somebody.”

With that in mind, the hair stylists and nail technicians hosted an afternoon fundraiser Nov. 19, including an opportunity to visit and have a picture taken with Santa “Kos” for a donation to the cause.

Leading up to that day, they offered baked goods for donations and raffle chances, which concluded at the end of Nov. 19.

The Animal Recycling Kennel volunteers brought seven animals — five dogs and two cats — for residents to see and possibly take home that day.

A non-profit organization which receives no state or governmental assistance, The ARK relies upon donations and volunteers to keep the no-kill shelter going.

“Adoption fees keep the doors open,” said volunteer and The ARK board member Lynn Scoon.

At one time, the shelter can house 100 cats and 60 to 70 dogs which range from purebreds to mutts as well as small to big in size, Scoon said.

Volunteers are always needed to clean the cat rooms, run the dogs, answer the phone, do laundry, bathe animals, clean dishes and more. Some retirees even donate their time to help out, Scoon said.

Volunteers are focusing more in taking the animals offsite from The ARK’s location on Illinois Route 26 in Lacon to places such as PetSmart or Pooch Couture.

The ARK is open noon-2 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. More information can be found online at or on facebook.

To assist the shelter, the HairMasters raised more than $1,400 and presented the check last week.
