PEORIA — The Nolan Gorman era with the Peoria Chiefs ended on Thursday.
The parent club St. Louis Cardinals promoted Gorman -- the No. 1-ranked prospect in the organization -- to high-A Palm Beach before the Chiefs opened the second half with a game against Cedar Rapids.
The Chiefs won that game, 4-2, over the Kernels on a two-run homer in the eighth inning by Brendan Donovan before 3,640 at Dozer Park.
Peoria outfielder Bryce Denton pulled his team into a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left-center.
THINGS TO KNOW
• Nolan Gorman was the Cardinals No. 1 pick (19th overall) in the 2018 MLB Draft. The Cardinals signed him for $3.23 million. He hit .241 with 10 home runs (fourth-most in the league) and earned Midwest League All-Star honors this season.
Gorman first arrived in Peoria on a promotion from rookie league Johnson City last season. All told over parts of two seasons, he played 92 games for the Chiefs, hit .230 with 16 home runs and had 57 RBI. He homered in one of every 20.9 at-bats.
• Chiefs lefty Colin Schmid posted a quality start in which he worked six innings, scattered seven hits, allowed two runs, walked one and whiffed seven.
CHIEFS BRIEFS: The Chiefs got Leandro Cedeno back up from the Gulf Coast League after Nolan Gorman was promoted to high-A. Cedeno was in the lineup as a DH on Thursday. ... Chiefs first baseman-outfielder Juan Yepez played third base in the wake of Gorman's departure. Yepez played at third for the Chiefs last season.
