CHILLICOTHE - Doris A. Crothers, age 86, died January 14, 2021, at Central Baptist Village in Norridge, Illinois, where she resided for the past two years.
Doris was born November 26, 1934, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, to Irvin and Mamie (Wortmann) Hogg. She graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1953, attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, and received bachelor’s degree in education in 1966 and master’s degree in education in 1972 from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Doris was an English teacher and counselor at Illinois Valley Central High School in Chillicothe for almost 30 years. Much loved by her students, many continued to stay in touch with her long after they graduated.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Julie Crothers of Park Ridge, Illinois; and her niece, Ariana Nikitas of Chicago, Illinois. Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Dave Hogg; and her sister, Linda Hogg Nikitas.
Doris enjoyed theater performances and traveling, especially to Ireland. She was a lover of poetry, with a special appreciation for the Scottish poet Robert Burns. And, she was a lifelong avid supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and especially her favorite player Stan Musial.
As an ardent supporter of social justice and a dedicated educator, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Southern Poverty Law Center or the IVC Educational Foundation.
A memorial service will be held in Chillicothe, Illinois, at a future date after the COVID-19 crisis.
