Even though the Pekin girls basketball team has been eliminated from the Class 4A postseason, two players have moved on to the sectional round of the Class 4A three-point shooting competition.
Sophomore Taylor Goss and junior Braelyn Oberle qualified Thursday night at the Rock Island Regional. They were two of four shooters who earned sectional berths from among 12 competitors
Goss was 9-for-15 from behind the arc. Oberle was 8-for-15.
They’ll compete next Thursday (Feb. 21) before the championship game of the Normal West Sectional. The top four shooters at Normal West will qualify for the state finals Feb. 28 at Redbird Arena in Normal.
Former Pekin boys basketball star Jamie King won the Class AA and King of the Hill championships in the 2007 three-point shooting competition, held at Carver Arena in Peoria. King beat the Class A champion to be King of the Hill.
The King of the Hill and Queen of the Hill (girls) contests now involve four class winners.
The three-point shooting competition is officially called the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown.
