CHILLICOTHE — A 34-year-old man was found dead early Saturday morning in a Chillicothe house fire, the Peoria County Sheriff's Office reported.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the man as Nicklaus T. Waechter. According to an email from Sheriff Brian Asbell, his deputies and members of the Chillicothe Fire Department responded to 15718 Regency Park Place at about 12:32 a.m. on a report of a house fire. A man, they were told, was inside.

Waechter was found unresposive and not breathing inside the home. After failed resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m., Harwood said.

Autopsy results indicate he died of smoke inhalation from the fire. No other contributing injuries were discovered.

The cause of fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal, the Peoria County Coroner's Office and the Sheriff's Office.

Peoria Heights and Princeville fire departments assisted in fighting the fire.
