EUREKA — The Tazewell County Health Department has denied a Journal Star Freedom of Information Act request for more information on the cryptosporidium outbreak originating in a public swimming pool in Tazewell County.

The Journal Star filed a FOIA request with TCHD on Wednesday morning seeking the name of the swimming pool used by the one person who tested positive for the parasite and the number of others who are suspected to be infected.

On Friday morning, Janet Johnson, the FOIA officer for TCHD, denied the request.

“To the extent that documents related to your request exist, those documents are preliminary drafts, notes, recommendations memoranda or other records exempt under the Illinois FOIA,” said Johnson, who also said that releasing the information at this time would “interfere with that pending investigation and unavoidably disclose the identity of persons providing information related to the investigation.”

The Journal Star asked for the number of suspected cases, not names of individuals, to determine the scope of the outbreak.

The Journal Star will file another FOIA with TCHD next week.
