IVC places two in the top four finishers

Illinois Valley Central wrestling earned a silver medal Saturday at the IHSA Class 1A State Finals on Saturday.

IVC senior Riley Beard took second place in the 145-pound bracket after dropping in the title bout to Dakota senior J.J. Wolfe by a 10-2 major decision.

“It’s a great feeling, but you always want more,” Beard said. “I didn’t have enough gas … in that last match. I got that takedown, got a little tired, didn’t have the strength to pull it off and catch up. I was down too far.”

Beard, who finished his 2014-15 season with a record of 45-2, won his opening-round bout Friday over Sparta senior Anthony Carter (27-9) by a 1-minute, 35-second fall.

In the quarterfinals, Beard advanced with an 8-2 decision over Stillman Valley freshman Sam Durfey (23-13).

Beard’s final win of the season came in the semifinals with a 9-1 major decision over Shelbyville senior Jared Finley (40-8).

Fellow senior Jordan Ladd finished in fourth place in the 195-pound division, wrapping up his season with a 43-7 record.

Ladd won his opening-round bout over Peotone senior Tom Ruffino (24-4) by a 10-6 decision, but fell in the quarterfinals to Erie senior Austin Shoup (43-1) by an 8-2 decision.

Ladd then defeated Shelbyville junior Caleb Cloe (27-11) in the opening round of wrestlebacks by a 3-minute, 22-second technical fall.

In the next round, Ladd took an 11-0 major decision over Plano senior Austin Ricketts (17-11), then advanced to the third-place bout with a 1-minute, 43-second technical fall over Herscher senior Mitch Geister (33-13).

Ladd once again faced Shoup in the third-place bout, but Shoup once again bested Ladd with a 2-minute, 59-second fall.

St. Joseph-Ogden junior Wesley Kibler (45-3) took first place at 195 with a 14-2 major decision over Monmouth-Roseville senior Logan Millizer (41-6).
