The Lady Grey Ghosts ended the season fighting against Dunlap in the regional championship. The No. 2 seed Eagles took the win over No. 1 seed IVC with a two-set battle resulting in the 25-11, 29-27 final score. It was IVC’s second consecutive time facing Dunlap in the Monmouth Regional championship. In 2012, the girls lost 25-20, 25-10. IVC was left without one of its main players for the match. Senior setter Brooke Ratcliff tore her ACL in the regional semifinal game against Galesburg. Coach Hillary Haen called in junior Katelyn Heinz to fill the role. “Your setter’s the quarterback and our quarterback was out,” Haen said. “It made a difference, but I would say Kaitlyn Heinz did an amazing job tonight.” “I think it went pretty good,” said Heinz. “It was tough. I was kind of nervous but I think the team played really well and I’m really proud to be with them.” Dunlap grabbed the first point in the first set and held onto the lead until reaching 25. At the first IVC time out, the Lady Grey Ghosts were 8-15 and came back in the next rally with a kill by junior Shayna VanOstrand. IVC called its last time out at 10-20. Senior Amanda Bowen came out with a kill in Dunlap’s back corner. Once Dunlap’s Savanna Stear had possession of the serve at 11-21 the set was soon to be over. Stear had three of her four aces to secure the first-set win for Dunlap. The second set was in favor of IVC in the first half. Sophomore Madeline Batek went on a four-serve streak to boost the Lady Grey Ghosts up to a 4-2 lead. IVC held onto the lead when junior Olivia Parrott got a kill to end Dunlap’s serving time at 8-6. Junior Hannah Scherer served next and put an ace on the board on her first serve. The Eagle’s Becca Bowlin ended Scherer’s serves with a kill to make it 10-7. When Morgan Flinn of Dunlap served, the Eagles were able to tie it 10-10 but could not hold onto it after Parrott serves to gain the lead again. A Dunlap time out was called when IVC was up 16-11. In the midst of exchanging serves, Dunlap earned its first lead at 20-19. After the next point by IVC to tie it up, the struggle started for each team. The two teams went back and forth on serves and points. IVC had back-to-back serves at 25-24 but a dink by Dunlap halted it quickly. The Lady Grey Ghosts kept at it to keep it tied at 27-27. Dunlap sealed the victory after IVC fumbled the ball and hit out on the next play. “We got stuck in rotation at the end and didn’t have any seniors in the front,” Haen said. “For next year, it will be great experience for those girls at the front.” The Lady Grey Ghosts ended the season 25-8 overall.
