Gladys Irene Nibbelin, 72, died at 3:35 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Normal, where she had been a resident this past year.
Born Dec. 4, 1935, in Princeville to Louis J. and Esther I. (Hauk) Hoffman, she married Ralph L. Nibbelin June 5, 1955, in Alta. He died Jan. 13, 2007.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Glen Hoffman; a sister, Lois Phillips; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Friederich.
Surviving are her mother of Edwards; four sons, Mark L. (Jodi) Nibbelin and Timothy R. (Meghan) Nibbelin, both of Normal, and Michael C. (Kay) Nibbelin and Thomas E. Nibbelin, both of Bloomington; five grandchildren; a brother, Warren (Sandra) Hoffman, and a sister, Laura (Russell) Stokes of Dunlap; a brother-in-law, Gary Phillips of East Moline; and Diana Smith of Sammamish, Wash., who lived with the family for several years.
She graduated from Dunlap High School in 1953, where she was active in FAA, GAA and cheerleading.
She and her husband moved to Chillicothe in 1957, with Ralph teaching at the high school.
She served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She participated in different bowling leagues at Chilli Bowl.
She also served in a number of roles at Plymouth Congregational Church, where she was a member since 1961, including director of Hillcrest Nursery School, which she founded in 1972.
She retired in 1999 after 27 years in pre-school education.
She lived in Chillicothe for 50 years.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry Sharp will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services. Burial will be at a later date.
