Recently I had the honor of speaking with published author and well-credentialed family therapist Helene Rothschild. It had been my mission to reach Helene regarding her poem, which I had seen printed on a beautiful poster. Her words were so powerful that I copied them down immediately because I wanted to share them with others. Helene and I were finally able to speak at length about her poem, sharing our professional experiences, parenting styles, family values, and lifetime philosophies. I asked Helene if I might share her work in this column, and she agreed, hoping to make a difference in the life of a child by reaching even more families. Her poem is a message for parents, teachers, grandparents, neighbors; all those who connect with children, and make a difference, every single day.
As I Grow
Understand that I am growing up and changing very fast. It may be difficult to keep pace with me, but please try.
Listen to me and give me brief, clear answers to my questions. Then I will want to keep sharing my thoughts and feelings.
Reward me for telling the truth. Then I am not frightened into lying.
Tell me when you make mistakes and what you learn from them. That helps me accept that I am okay, even when I blunder.
Pay attention to me, and spend time with me. That helps me believe that I am important and worthwhile.
Do the things you want me to do. Then I have a good, positive role model.
Trust and respect me. Even though I am smaller than you, I have feelings and needs just like you.
Compliment and appreciate me. That will help me feel good, and want to continue to keep my agreements and do nice things for you.
Help me explore my unique interests, talents and potential. In order for me to be happy, I need to be me, and not you or someone you want me to be.
Be an individual and create your own happiness. That helps me learn how to live a happy, successful and fulfilling life.
Thank you for hearing me. I love you!
Helene’s wonderful words so beautifully express the needs of every growing child. Those parents who are able to provide understanding and a listening ear throughout their child’s growing years will also learn and grow, right along with their child. Those parents who are able to provide strong values with loving guidance have the opportunity to build the scaffolding for a strong, emotionally healthy child. Those who continuously provide the rewards of attention, compliments, and recognition of achievements will build their child’s self-confidence, trust and respect, which are the core values in a meaningful relationship. Remember to follow your child’s individuality, by thoughtfully and intentionally exposing him to cultural and creative experiences, which will help him to grow with success into the person he will become.
