Illinois Valley Central closed the regular season for wrestling Jan. 25 with Senior night at home against Rock Falls.

“This senior class is a great group,” coach Matt Russell said. “They were freshman when I became the head coach and they have done a tremendous job leading this year.”

The team honored seniors Brendon Butler, Brandon Berchtold, Reece Smith, Jesse Hall, Jake Innis and Roman Razo.

The team lost the dual meet, 36-27.

Riley Beard and Calvin Campbell racked up wins for the Ghosts against the Rockets.

In their final home meet of their careers, Berchtold, Hall and Smith each garnered a victory.

“We need to go into Regionals and wrestle hard and lay it on the line,” Russell said. “At this point, there is no other way to approach it.”

The Ghosts wrestle in the Eureka Regional, Saturday, with times to be announced.

“We will have some really tough practices to start the week and back off a little as we go,” Russell said. “Hopefully, the wrestlers will be fresh on Saturday.”

The Ghosts finish with a dual team record of 16-5.

The team will face El Paso Gridley, Eureka, Granville, Kewanee, Knoxville St. Bede and Varna in at the Regional.
