Furuholmen, Weber set course records

Illinois Valley Central hosted its first home track meet Sept. 23, and two outstanding juniors led the charge of the Grey Ghosts by setting course records.

Marci Furuholmen finished seventh of 49 runners in 20:22, and David Weber came in third in 16:30.

The previous girls record, held by Katherine Quigg and Erica Buster, was 20:24.

The previous boys record, held by Michael Belt, was 16:33.

“As a team, this was easily our best meet of the year,” said coach Mike Themas. “We had nine personal records for our home course. The Rock Falls girls looked very good. I was pleased with our girls’ second-place finish out of five teams. The boys continue to improve.”

Girls team results were: 1. Rock Falls 19, 2. IVC 64, 3. Erie/Prophetstown 99, 4. Mendota 112 and 5. Princeton 136.

Finishing for IVC were: 12. Sarah James 21:40 PR; 13. Cecily Stedwill 2141; 14. Rachel Wargo 21:47 PR; 18. Kelsey Thornton 22:54 PR; 20. Jessica Owdom 23:10 PR; 21. Emily Pence 23:29; 25. Tawnie McGann 24:05; 29. Liz Norris 24:30; 36. Lindsey James 25:05; 46. Bethany Espinosa 28:24; and 48. Mikayla Vail 28:28.

Team results for the boys were: 1. Rock Falls 47, 2. Erie/Prophetstown 60, 3. Mendota 66, 4. Princeton 78 and 5. IVC 85.

Individual results included (62 runners): 11. Danny Kendzierski 18:10 PR; 16. Alex Tarantino 18:24 PR; 22. Corey Gondeck 18:53 PR; 41. Alex Weistart 20:35 PR; 42. Caleb Bjerk 20:57 PR; and 44. Miles Bannister 20:58.

At the Kewanee Invitational Saturday, the IVC girls placed third and the boys fifth of the 12 teams competing.

“We ran a lot better here than we did a week ago,” said Themas. “In fact, we had 13 PRs. The girls earned three individual trophies and five ribbons for their efforts. The boys had one individual trophy and four ribbons.”

Girls teams score were: Ottawa Marquette 39, Knoxville 56, Hall 62, Mendota 94, IVC 112 and Alwood/ROWVA 142.

Individual results included (79 runners): 8. Furuholmen 22:09 PR; 18. S. James 23:27 PR; 19. Stedwill 23:39 PR; 25. Wargo 24:05 PR; 28. Thornton 24:28 PR; 31. Owdom 24:42 PR; 33. McGann 24:58; 38. Pence 25.22 PR; 45. Norris 25:33; 54. L. James 26:12 PR; 64. Vail 29:00; 71. Espinosa 30:25; and 72. Molly LaPayne 30:28.

Team scores for the boys included: Sherrard 62, Orion 73, IVC 84, Mendota 90, Hall 106, Alwood/ROWVA 124 and Ottawa Marquette 132.

Individual scores were (59 runners): 6. Weber 17:30 PR; 26. Tarantino 19:40 PR; 32. Gondeck 20:09 PR; 33. Kendzierski 20:22; 40. Bjerk 21:46 PR; and 49. Bannister 23:07.

The teams will next compete at Prairie Central Saturday.
