The Illinois Valley Central wrestlers’ dominant win over Rock Falls Jan. 27 was a sign that the team may be hitting its stride at a crucial point with the Regional looming.

Before the start of the North Central Illinois Conference match, the Ghosts honored seniors Frank Barrett, John Hess, Scott Ladd, Aaron Lunini, Trace Miller, Eddy Rohman and Cody Witherspoon.

“This year’s group of seniors has been great,” coach Matt Russell said. “They have done a nice job of stepping into leadership roles. They will all be missed when the season is over.”

Barrett got the match started on the right foot by quickly finding a flaw in his opponent’s technique and pinned him in 2:37.

Junior Zach Switzer then racked up points for the Ghosts when he dominated his foe for a pin in 1:59.

Lunini showed off his skills when he pinned his opponent in 1:21.

Junior Jared Lauber found himself locked in one of his toughest matches of the year, but still polished off a 6-4 victory.

Rohman, Miller, Witherspoon and sophomore Brendan Butler all won by forfeit.

IVC won, 45-26.

“The win over Rock Falls was nice,” Russell said. “It is always great to get a win on senior night.”

On Saturday, the team hosted the NCIC conference tournament.

The Grey Ghosts finished ninth of 12 teams with a score of 73.5.

“We had some guys have really nice tournaments at the NCIC,” Russell said.

Switzer advanced through the ranks to reach the championship match, but finished second in the
112-pound division by losing to a Dixon opponent.

Lunini finished third in the 125-pound division by taking down his foe with a pin in 5:12.

Lauber took home third place in the 152-pound division by forcing a pin in 5:21.

“It is a really tough tournament with all of the Reagan schools there,” Russell said, referring to the other division in the NCIC.

The Ghosts next play in the Eureka Regional Saturday, with times to be announced.

“As long as the kids wrestle hard and smart this weekend at Regionals, we will be happy with the outcome,” Russell said.
