Chillicothe, Ill. -

The Ghosts started out last week with the goal of sweeping two regular season makeup games as they continue to prepare for the playoffs.

The boy’s varsity soccer team traveled to Geneseo Sept. 29 to make up a game that was rained out early in September.

The Grey Ghosts were not bogged down with the challenge of playing their first of two rescheduled games for the week as they not only shined brightly on offense, but defense as well.

The Ghosts took the lead in the first period off a Chris Olivera goal from a Marty Heredia assist.

The Ghosts would get another goal off an owned goal by Geneseo to give IVC a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first period.

The Ghosts added another goal in the second period by Alex Olivera off a Chris Olivera assist.

The Ghosts’ offense was relentless during the game, as they took 10 shots on the Geneseo goal.

Not only did the Ghosts shine offensively, their defense also played outstanding, as they shut out Geneseo.

Senior goalkeeper Nolan Wilson had another strong performance, racking up six saves on the day while effectively making sure Geneseo had no chance of getting back into the game.

The only down note for the game was that the Ghosts racked up 10 fouls, something that teams can take advantage of if they are given the opportunity.

The Ghosts played their second makeup game of the week on Friday when they took on Peoria Christian at IVC.

The Ghosts played another strong game as their offense and defense turned up the heat in a 4-1 victory.

Chris Olivera had a game MVP performance, as he scored three goals, which were complemented by one from Heredia.

The team’s goals were made on two assists by Alex Olivera, one by Matt Welch and one by Braden McIntyre.

Wilson racked up another outstanding performance as he accumulated five saves on six shots by Peoria Christian.

“The game was an exciting match between the No. 1 seed IVC vs. the No. 2 seed Peoria Christian,” head coach Patrick Sell said. “Both teams came out hard, and fortunately, IVC came out on top. We were pleased to score four goals, but want to improve defensively to complete the shutout in the future.”

The Ghosts have improved their overall record to 9-2-4 and their conference record to 3-2-0.

On Tuesday, the Ghosts played Dixon at home.

At 6 p.m. Thursday at IVC, the Ghosts will play host to Roanoke-Benson in Pack the Field Night, with fans encouraged to come out and show their support for the team.

The Ghosts will play their final game of the regular season against Streator at 6 p.m. Monday at home. The game is also Senior Night, where the team will honor the hard work of the senior players.

At 4 p.m. Oct. 15, the Ghosts will begin their playoff run, as they play Illini Bluffs in the Regional quarterfinal round of the postseason.
