The Grey Ghosts’ road tour of the NCIC Conference continues on Friday at Kewanee as they take on the Boilermakers in another conference matchup.
The Ghosts, who are coming off of a conference win over Rock Falls on the road, are looking to add another win to their conference record of 2-1 and their overall record of 5-1.
Last week against the Rock Falls Rockets the Ghosts won their most complete team win with not only the offense scoring but the special teams on a punt return and the defense on two interception returns.
The Ghosts’ victory over the Rockets, who were undefeated when IVC came to town, showed a nice turnaround on defense from their first loss to Mendota one week prior to the Rock Falls game.
The Ghosts have been playing strong football all year long but still find themselves looking up at Mendota for the conference lead after a heartbreaking loss to the Trojans two weeks ago.
The Boilermakers, on the other hand, haven’t won a game all year and find themselves at the bottom of the conference.
The Boilermakers are vulnerable on both offense and defense but the Ghosts still must not take any conference game for granted.
The Boilermakers’ defense has given up 164 points all year while their offense has only scored 50 points.
The Ghosts, on the other hand, have only given up 71 points while their offense has put up an impressive 174 points.
Although they have put up a solid number of points already this year, the Ghosts offense might have to rely on back up running backs Dan Semtner and Cody Kentzel as starters James Lauber and Jake Elias are still questionable.
All signs would point towards a large Grey Ghosts’ victory as long as they don’t take the Boilermakers lightly and show up to play as well as they have been all year long.
The Ghosts, despite losing one game, are in the heat of a tight conference race with Mendota leading the conference and Rock Falls tied in conference record with the Ghosts. This makes every game for the Ghosts, especially these last conference games, all the more meaningful.
“We’re gonna have some young kids playing again and we’re just looking to get better each week,” head coach Tim Heinz said of the upcoming game.
Of the last stretch of regular season games before the playoffs, Heinz said, “We’re gonna polish everything up and try to get better each week.”
The game is at 7:30 p.m.
