The Chillicothe Junior High Mustangs are not only taking on Princeville Wednesday night, they are also battling against heart disease.
The CJH Lady Mustang volleyball team is hosting “Paint the Gym Red” to benefit the American Heart Association.
“We hope to raise awareness of heart disease, which is the No. 1 killer of women, and to help raise money for the American Heart Association, which does a lot of things for men and women with heart disease,” coach Sara Kinney said.
The project began when Kinney asked the Illinois Elementary School Association about doing the event.
The IESA then gave Kinney the green light to use a red and white ball for the game, which is the first game of its kind sanctioned by the IESA.
The team has been selling red hearts, which will be on display in the gym for the game.
During the game, there will be a raffle of baked goods as well as red candy on sale, thanks to donations from CUB foods.
Proceeds from the event go to benefit the American Heart Association.
The Lady Mustangs play at 4:30 p.m. at CJH against Princeville.
