Walter W. Berchtold Sr., 82, of Chillicothe, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy.

Born Feb. 2, 1928, in Speer, to Daniel and Tillie (Streitmatter) Berchtold, he married Alice Holt on May 22, 1955, in Chillicothe. She survives.

Surviving are five children, Dennis Berchtold of Chillicothe; Larry Berchtold of Bloomfield, Mo.; Walter W. Berchtold Jr. of Wyoming, Ill.; Carol (Matthew) Jaworowski of Rockford, and Steven (Michelle) Berchtold of Mossville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lester (Donna) Berchtold of Cave Creek, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Paul Berchtold; two sisters; and four brothers.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korea War and was honorably discharged in 1953.

He worked as a carpenter for many years in the Henry area and then worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 25 years until retiring in 1990.He was a member of the UAW Local 974.

A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Davison-Fulton-Anderson Chapel in Chillicothe. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday with visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Blue Ridge Cemetery near Edelstein, IL.

Memorials may be made to Rescue 33 in Chillicothe.
