Kelly Franklin, a senior MacMurray College student from Dunlap, is part of an off-campus college worker program.
Franklin, the daughter of Robin Schmutz of Dunlap, is a deaf education major.
As part of this college-worker program, Franklin lives at the Illinois School for the Deaf throughout the school year while attending MacMurray College. In exchange for 15 hours of work per week, students in this program receive free housing and meals.
This is the second year that Franklin has been living at ISD.
“The kids are great, and this program is a great way to improve my signing,” said Franklin.
Franklin oversees the ISD students in the school’s residential dorms. She also tutors students and builds relationships with them by using sign language.
“Illinois School for the Deaf’s college-worker program is beneficial to any college student. There is an opportunity to positively impact the lives of deaf and hard of hearing students,” said Grady Gilkey, Illinois School for the Deaf’s dean of students and college-work program supervisor. “It is a fantastic way to jump-start your career.”
