The boys basketball team suffered two losses over the weekend, both within the final seconds.
On Friday, the boys made a strong second-half comeback against Limestone. But, a three-point play by Limestone’s Tim Jones sealed the Eagle’s fate, 33-31.
Going into halftime, the Eagles were down 21-13.
However, the Eagles held the Rockets to only five points in the third and seven in the fourth while they made their comeback.
With a little over three minutes left in the game, Dunlap held a 31-26 lead.
“The only thing we didn’t do was finish the game,” Dunlap coach Jeff Barker said. “We made some fundamental errors and turned it over a couple of times down the stretch.
“It was unfortunate for our guys, because they played hard in the second half and did a number of things well. We just needed a couple of more.”
Sam VanDenAvond led the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Nate Gosnell chipped in seven points.
A day later, the Eagles were down two after Gosnell sank a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to pull within 50-48.
After stealing the inbounds pass and calling a timeout, Dunlap still had a second left to tie or win the game.
However, Gosnell’s 3-pointer bounced off the rim, dropping the Eagles to 5-11 overall (2-4 Mid-Illini Conference).
“I thought we took some real questionable shots in the third period that allowed them to take control,” Barker said. “We needed to be more patient with our offense instead of settling for contested jumpshots.”
VanDenAvond had a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds, while Gosnell added 13.
The boys travel to Peoria Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Friday before returning home to face Pekin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
