Once again, students in the Illinois Valley Central High School Fashion and Clothing Class have made the holidays brighter for less fortunate children.
IVC High School students have consistently participated in the Salvation Army’s annual dress a doll or bear project.
Before becoming Christmas gifts for children, the dolls and stuffed bears are distributed to the public to decorate.
Not only does the Salvation Army distribute the toys, but also distributes awards for the clothing made. For the first time, IVC students were awarded Grand Champions. Meri Terpstra and Christa McGrath both took first place for their dolls, and were awarded Grand Champions.
IVC students captured many additional awards including, Bethany Espinosa, Brittney Dunbar, and Rachel Vinson who all took third place for the bears they clothed. Jeff Davis took a second for his bear entry. Alina Lozowski took first place for her bear entry and Sarah Cossin took first place for the doll she clothed.
The awards were made public at the Salvation Army Tea Nov. 30. During the program Salvation Army personnel informed the audience of the extreme need in the Peoria area.
Students worked for three weeks in their fashion and clothing class to dress the dolls and bears, reports IVC teacher Marilyn Bierma.
“The bears were furnished by the Salvation Army so that volunteers can dress them. Each July, I go and pick up bears and dolls hoping my fashion and clothing class students will get excited about helping area children by making clothes. This is a wonderful project for my students to undertake. It teaches clothing construction, teaches design functions and it helps students consider play value for a child. Adding jump ropes or a homemade snow board adds fun value for the child,” said Bierma.
Following the event at the Salvation Army, the IVC students’ field trip continued with lunch at Steak ‘N Shake, then a scavenger hunt at Northwoods Mall.
Bierma said IVC has participated in the dress a doll/bear project for at least the last 10 years. “Each year I am amazed at what the students come up with in costume design. This is our first year to have students from IVC win the grand overall in the doll awards/student division which makes it extra fun.”
Bierma said the students enjoyed the field trip but will likely feel the full impact of their efforts closer to Christmas when they realize what their work accomplished.
“This little gift can make a world of difference to the one child.”
